LITERATURE & COMPOSITION for 9th & 10th grades - Teacher: Tonya Preston
This academically rigorous, 2-semester program is designed to challenge the young Christian mind and prepare them for university studies. Using lively methods of instruction, Mrs. Preston will encourage and guide the students as they broaden their vocabulary for the purpose of reading with understanding; improve their mental and verbal acuity through lively dialogue and debate; and apply that which they’ve learned to produce strong and meaningful compositions. Analyzing and interpreting literature requires the knowledge of literary terminology and devices. Developing content, structure, and voice in composition requires proper syntax, mechanics and diction. Practicing these techniques and requiring accountability via assessment will provide the students with a skill set that not only prepares them for college, but for that of life-long application. Students should expect substantial reading, bi-monthly compositions, and creative projects as homework. Timed in-class essays and editing exercises will help the students refine their skills and prepare for the SAT. Students' work will be graded.  Students and parents will access scores via Engrade service. INSTITUTE FOR EXCELLENCE IN WRITING for Grades 4-6 - Teacher: Tonya Preston
Writing.  That word will either delight your child or send him/her shrieking down the street.  However, whether you have a student who can’t write enough, or one who’d rather have his teeth scraped than pick up a pen, your child will benefit from this class.  Based on Andrew Pudewa's Institute for Excellence in Writing program, 4th - 6th graders will learn to “keyword outline” short stories, fables, and poetry to develop valuable note-taking skills that will help them in all areas of study.  In the beginning, they learn to imitate classical pieces and reconstruct the stories with ~:STYLE:~.  Eventually, they learn models for short reports and critiques.  SAT vocabulary is introduced, and the students become more comfortable with public speaking as they recite their compositions to the class. Tonya is accustomed to modifying the program to challenge the natural writer or advanced student, while still encouraging and instructing the new or reluctant writer.  Her lively classroom methods are intended to engage the child and bring out the author in each student.

JUNIOR LITERATURE for Grades 5-7                                     Teacher:  Tonya Preston
They did it . . . could you? What would you do if, at age 12, you were left alone in the wilderness with no electric and little food? Would it be easier if you were stranded alone on an island for 18 years? If you slipped on a ring and were suddenly transported to another world filled with fantastical and sometime-frightening creatures, would you be delighted or terrified? Do you have enough imagination to create an on-going story that would last 2 years? Would you be more motivated to do so if your life depended on it? How would you feel if you were hated because of your skin color or your faith? If you achieved great success as an Olympian athlete, would you walk away from that to live in a foreign country where your life was constantly in danger? Would you have the fortitude to trek across the mountains while wounded, just to rescue orphans? Students in grades 5th-6th will journey through time and distant lands to discover how fictional characters and real individuals faced these challenges. Perhaps they’ll learn something about themselves along the way. Students must read daily to keep up with lively class discussions. To enhance the expedition, vocabulary homework and creative projects will be assigned. This voyage of the mind will include: The Magician’s Nephew, Crispin-The Cross of Lead, Eric Liddell, Sign of the Beaver, Gladys Aylward, Island of the Blue Dolphin, Words by Heart, and Shadow Spinner.

TOTAL IEW with WordSmith for Grades 6-8 - Teacher : Mrs. Nesteroff

The IEW writing style and structure will be incorporated and developed covering all types of writing; creative writing with pictures, report writing, narrative essay writing, imitations of fables and fairytales, interest stories and critiques. The stylistic techniques will be developed using a writer's checklist for each weekly assignment. These invaluable writing tools can be applied to any type of writing and can be carried with you all through your educational career.

NOTHING BUT WRITING for Grades 7-12 - Teacher : Mrs. Preston
Refine your writing skills! If you were asked to prepare a précis, an editorial, or an expository essay, would you know exactly what to do? Students ages 13-18 will learn the structures for all types of writing. Because syntax and mechanics are foundational to writing in the same way arithmetic and formulas are essential to higher math and science, students will have ample opportunity to master grammatical concepts and become more proficient writers. Students' work will be graded.  Students and parents will access scores via Engrade service.

Introduction to Photography Grades 7th-12th Teacher: Mrs. Owens
This class is a one semester class and will consist of:  the ‘grammar’ of photography (terms, how to hold the camera, simple basics), the 3 Basic Guidelines of good photography, and information and practice on an introductory level in the main areas of photography which include:  people and pet portraits, landscape, lighting, composition, developing “the photographer’s eye”, and more.  The first several classes will be more informative in nature, building a foundation of knowledge on which to work, and then we will delve into using what they are learning to begin creating the art of photography.  The aim (pun intended) of Introduction to Photography is to help the student accomplish more than just “shoot” pictures, but, instead, to be an “intentional image maker”.  My goal in this class is to help them see life differently through the lens, and to learn how to utilize simple techniques to transform their photography from snapshots to memorable keepsakes.    I hope at the end of this semester, they will no longer be saying, “I wish I could take a picture like that!”  Instead, I’d love to hear them say, “Look what I made!”  Homework is assigned weekly.  It will consist of a photography assignment and reading associated with the lessons given.  Students must be willing to do the work, and parents need to ensure that home work is completed.  In order for this to be an interactive class, students need to come in with their assignments to receive instruction, helpful (kind) critique, and input from their classmates. When students do not complete the homework, the class time is less than beneficial for all.  A homework assignment could take as little as one hour a week, or more if your student is inspired to do so.  Your $30 supplies fee covers an introductory level photography book to be used as text and a professionally printed and matted photograph composed and made by your student to be on display at the Spring Performance Night.  See teacher biography for information on my qualifications. I enjoy helping the students develop their artistic talent and photographer’s “eye” and become excited about what they are capable of creating!

Intermediate Photography Grades 7th-12th Teacher: Mrs. Owens
Prerequisite: Introduction to Photography or permission from instructor.  (If student has not completed the Introduction to Photography class (or equivalent), he or she may be asked to complete a questionnaire or take a short quiz to determine if they have the background knowledge necessary for the Intermediate class. We will not be covering basics of photography or camera usage in this class.  We will be focusing on techniques and developing skills necessary to further their interest and talent in their photography skills.)  This is a one semester instructional, hands-on photography class.  We will build upon the basic foundation knowledge obtained in the Introduction to Photography semester.  More details, information, practice and hands-on assignments (including a field-trip or two) will be learned on:  composition, lighting, action, landscape, architecture, holiday and party photography, people and pet portraits and photojournalism.  Homework is assigned weekly.  It will consist of a photography assignment and reading associated with the lessons given.  Students must be willing to do the work, and parents need to ensure that home work is completed. You will need to bring in at least one printed photograph each week related to the assignment. Your $30 supplies fee covers an intermediate level photography book to be used as text and a professionally printed and matted photograph composed and made by your student to be on display at the Spring Performance Night.  See teacher biography for information on my qualifications.  I look forward to helping your student further their skills in photography and become more purposeful in their artistic talent as a ‘painter of light’.  (Photo = light, Graph = to write with or record with, to paint)
